Osteitis Pubis
Anatomy
The pubic symphysis is a cartilaginous joint formed between the bodies of the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. Osteitis pubis is characterised by inflammation of the bones, leading to degeneration and erosion at the pubic symphysis.
Mechanism of Injury
- Activities involving lots of kicking, twisting and turning eg. football.
Symptoms
- Gradual onset of pain centrally localized in the groin with radiation down one or both inner thighs.
- Tenderness over the pubic symphysis joint.
- It is painful during: passive abduction (leg moving away from the body); active adduction (leg moving toward the body); and internal rotation of the hip.
- Pain may often be more intense the morning after exercising or when changing position in bed at night.
- Loss of flexibility in the groin region.
