Anatomy

The patella tendon attaches the quadriceps femoris muscle (anterior thigh muscles) to the tibial tuberosity (bony prominence on the lower leg bone), indirectly via the patella (kneecap).

Mechanism of Injury

  • Overuse or poor biomechanics can cause inflammation and degeneration of the tendon.

Symptoms

  • Pain of gradual onset.
  • Pain and tenderness at the lower part of the patella is common.
  • Thickening of the proximal patellar tendon may be present.
  • Hypotrophy of the muscles is often associated with this injury, as well as tightness of the quadriceps.
